Even in our most challenging times, God is with us

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

Fear, doubt and uncertainty are part of life. And for most students and many adults, it is a part of our lives now more than ever. A devastating virus that the best and brightest scientists of the 21st century can’t prevent or cure. It is taking our loved ones, especially the most vulnerable among them. It has forced our lifestyles to drastically change and is taking jobs, and with them, our sense of security. It is cruel. It is taking precious last moments of life on earth with loved ones. It is leaving some people to convalesce or even die alone. And afterward, it is taking their loved ones’ ability to celebrate their lives and be comforted by the presence of others who grieve.

It doesn’t make sense. Why is God letting this happen?

Even those with the strongest faith have times of doubt. It’s OK to doubt. We aren’t always supposed to understand. We don’t have to be able to see the “big picture.” Because God is the big picture. That is faith!

But still, look closely. Even during a pandemic, there is good to be found. Life is slower. Families are reconnecting. New bonds are forming and others are growing stronger. Those who are healthy are helping those who are vulnerable. Even the air and water are cleaner.

So hold on to your faith. God will never leave you. He loves you so much that He gave His only son for you. Even though COVID-19 and all of its ramifications is not what you wanted or expected, God has a plan. Trust in Him.

And continue to pray. It may not feel like God is listening, but He is. Keep turning to him for comfort. He will always be here.
